Bringing quality food and drinks to our local area that’s easy for busy families to get, but that isn’t fast food.

That’s executive chef and owner/operator Matt Smith’s focus for Backyard Bird — a chicken and donuts restaurant in the Timnath community that’s been serving up high quality home cooking type fare for families on the go since 2020.

Matt and his wife Nicole, who works as Backyard Bird’s design, marketing, and accounting department, were drawn from California to Timnath for the town’s family-oriented approach to living.

“The sense of family here is pretty cool in how it’s looked at from more of a whole community perspective,” Matt said. “Everyone looks out for each other. It’s amazing to encourage my kids to go outside as opposed to being worried that they’re going to play out front.”

The couple also chose the area for their brick-and-mortar location because they were looking for a place where their restaurant could put down roots alongside their family. “We’re here to be part of the community and part of the growth of Timnath,” Matt said. “It was a pretty cool opportunity to be in the beginning stages of the town.”

Being so close to downtown Timnath and the growing neighborhoods surrounding it gives those busy families an easy option for breakfast, lunch and dinner prepared by people who care. Located just off Harmony Road east of I-25, Backyard Bird gives commuters a quick, quality option for breakfast and coffee too.

On why Matt chose to bring his Michelin starred French cuisine background to chicken and donuts, Matt explained he believes there’s a little bit of a misconception of what healthy really is. “To me, healthy is something you’ve made that’s not processed.”

“Sometimes the best way to move forward is by going backwards to only using simple, raw ingredients that are never processed,” Matt said. You can expect fresh, never frozen ingredients for a superior food and coffee product. “I want to be proud of food that I make, and I want it to be the kind of food my kids would eat,” said Matt.
